Do You Need Vitamins?
YES! There are many specific health problems were we may recommend specific vitamins as part of the treatment.  The American Medical Association (AMA) has held the position for many years that unless you have a specific condition that required a specific vitamin as therapy, vitamins were a waste of money.  New research has shown that almost no one in the United States gets an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in their food anymore. The new position of the AMA as of last year is that EVERYONE should take a good multi-vitamin-mineral supplement their entire life. All cheaper ones are the same, the One Source line from Wal-Mart are one of the lowest priced better ones.  There are much better vitamins (food form) which cost a little more.  All vitamins are best absorbed when taken with a large meal.

WARNING ~ Many children die each year from overdoses (a lot all at once, or one a day for a long period of time) of vitamins that have iron in them.  Do NOT give children adult vitamins unless directed to do so.

YES! Taking two extra vitamins to reduce your chance of a heart attack or stroke is recommended by the AMA, the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control.  Every male 35 or older, and every female 40 or older should take two separate vitamins in addition to the daily multi-vitamin-mineral supplement.
Vitamin B-12 ~ Take only the 1,000 mcg strength once a day, this can be taken at any time.  Buy the regular B-12 as it may work better than the timed release B-12 and cost less.  MEMORY / Dementia / Alzheimer¹s may improve or may be prevented by taking B-12 too!

Folic Acid ~ All women 12 and older should take at least 400 mg of folic acid each day. This amount should be in every good multi-vitamin-mineral supplement. The recommendations to lower risk of heart attack and stroke is to take 800 mg of folic acid twice a day. Note that 400mg of folic acid should be in any good multi-vitamin so you do not need as much in the evening.

Calcium ~ 92% of the women in the United States do not get enough calcium in their diet.  If you have a diet high in dairy products, soybeans, nuts, and sardines, take one a day with a meal, if not take one twice a day with a meal.  Start taking calcium when you start having menstrual periods and don¹t stop.  There is a lot of controversy over which is the best calcium.  At this time I recommend Oyster Shell Calcium with vitamin D.

Fish Oil ~ More and more evidence suggests that everyone could benefit from taking an omega 3 fatty acid supplement twice a day with meals.  I recommend fish oil WITH MEALS; if you have any problems with fish oil take flax oil instead.
