Other Practitioners and Your Health
There are times when a specialist is the best option for your specific problem, although many specialists cannot spend adequate time with you to answer all your questions. (And, often you may not think of the question until later or you may not feel comfortable discussing an alternative issue with the specialist.) Many specialists will not offer alternatives, learn what is important to you or share enough information to enable you to make good decisions. What is right for most people may not be right for you.
We may not always have the answers you need right away, but if you ask a question that we are unable to answer we will find the answer for you.
We will take the time to explain the patho-physiology (the life sciences, the disease and how it all fits together) behind your problem, in plain English, so you can understand what the specialist was talking about.
If we do not already have it, we will find information about alternative treatments.
If we do not already have it, we will find information about the odds and risks of specific treatments so you can make better decisions. Example ~ A patient of ours had a cancer removed. It was a very well studied type of cancer and very specific information was available. The specialist recommended “a few radiation treatments” “just to be sure”. When the patient talked to the radiation oncologist a plan was laid out involving multiple surgeries to repair the damage from the numerous radiation treatments. For this cancer, at this stage, with these surgical findings, there were very clear numbers. There was a 5% chance of the cancer returning without the radiation and a 4% chance of it returning with the radiation. This patient chose not to undergo the radiation.
Sometimes you would just like a sounding board, someone in the medical profession who will brainstorm with you or assist you to arrive at a decision. We are here to help you.
