Complimenting Allopathic Medicine

Fordland Family Medical utilizes a holistic approach to treating all patients.  Allopathic medicine is the standard traditional medicine as practiced in the United States.  Allopathic medicine is usually the best option for acute illness and trauma. If you have a heart attack the standard medical treatment in the U.S. is probably the best choice.  If you cut your finger you want sutures not an herb.

Allopathic medicine is not effective for many chronic conditions and is only marginally better for health promotion and wellness.  At Fordland Family Medical we strive to provide the best care possible for every patient.  This care would include primary and secondary prevention and alternatives when appropriate or desired.

If there is a better treatment option documented by scientific studies, this will be offered.  Example ~ If an herbal treatment is safer, more effective, or both (and we have documentation of this), then this herb will be offered.  If you don’t want an herbal option ~ tell us!

When an alternative option makes the standard treatment more effective, this will be offered. Example ~ Comfrey tea contains a substance that promotes healing of muscle, ligament and bone injuries. Drinking Comfrey tea along with standard treatment for a broken bone will result in healing one third faster.  (Follow directions closely as many herbal treatments can be toxic if not taken correctly!) *

At Fordland Family Medical, each of us are not experts in all fields and modalities.  However, at least one provider is aware of most other modalities and alternative options and can refer you when the alternative would be the preferred treatment option.  Example ~ Even the American Medical Association recommends a chiropractic evaluation for patients with prolonged neck or back pain after an accident, and after radiological studies.

When allopathic medicine offers no possible solution or outcome,  other options will be explored.  Example ~ With ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease), allopathic medicine can treat only some of the symptoms. It will not cure ALS or prolong life. There are safe, possibly effective alternative treatments but currently no proven alternative treatments. Any chance is better than no chance at all.

When problems are identified outside the scope of Allopathic medicine they will be discussed with you and we will assist you in locating the services you need, if necessary.

Unlike many allopathic practitioners who treat the problem not the person, we feel that caring for the whole person is critical for the best outcome.  Integrating your personal desires and beliefs is important to us. This could be as simple as writing a prescription for a liquid because you have a hard time swallowing pills, to sending you straight to hospice when the best outcome you could expect would leave you bedridden for the rest of your life and this is not acceptable to you.
